2023 Mixed NTS – Div 3 Round 1 wrap

St Albans relegated to Div 4

Round 1 of this year's Mixed NTS has been played and unfortunately, we have to play Div 4 in the next round.

A 5-5 draw to Chester Cheetahs 2, was followed by a 1-6 loss to Thames Valley Vikings (Runners up) and a 2-6 loss to Nottingham Outlaws (Plate winners) and we finished last place in the group D.

Bedford Eagles (Bowl winners) gave us no chance in the Bowl Quarter Final. It was a clear 1-7.

In the Shield Semi Final, we met Liverpool Otters. We started well but could not score and lost 0-3.

In the 15th/16th playoff we played Ignite. Before the game it was already clear for both teams that they would continue in Div 4 in the next round. At halftime, we were 2-1 down. At the final whistle, both we and the referees had a 4-4 on the scorecards. However, there were brief protests from Ignite who felt they had won 5-4.

As the referees had a 4-4 on the scorecard, the drop-off was played out. There, neither we nor Ignite could score with their respective first attacks. Our second attack then ended with a try. Ignite started the game again and had a dangerous action but could not equalise before the whistle blew after 2 minutes.

At that point, we won the game 5-4 after drop-off. However, the score at the end of regular playing time was discussed again. Since it didn't make any difference whether we finished last or second last (as I said, both teams were relegated to Div 4), we didn't discuss it any further and let Ignite take the win.

Even though we finished last, it was a successful day where we were able to develop as a team. Our experienced players actively supported our inexperienced players.

Many thanks to our guest players who joined our team this Sunday. We are looking forward to all of you to re-join us again.

Congratulations to Nara and Alex B who were voted Team MVPs by our coaches.

Mixed National Touch Series ahead of us

The Mixed NTS comes with a new look in 2023.

  • Consolidated four-division Series to provide pathway for teams through the England Touch pathway

  • More competitive action between similar strength teams

  • Relegation and promotion between Divisions 1 and 2, and between 3 and 4, between events

  • Three single-day tournaments, with final rankings based on league points earned in the tournaments

  • Divisions 1 and 2 are invitation only (16 teams in each division); Divisions 3 and 4 are open to new teams. Initial tiering is based on 2022 rankings

  • With capacity of 32 teams at each day there is more opportunity for more teams to compete in the National Touch Series

  • Every team has to bring a full-time referee qualified to at least Level 1 standard. Teams will have to specify the name of this referee when they sign up for the tournament. The full referee policy is in the FAQ document

Saturday 17 June and Sunday 18 June 2023 will see the first round of this year's Mixed NTS. St Albans Touch have entered a team for Division 3 and we are looking forward to the tournament on Sunday.
